Championship Sunday Picks

This is the most exciting weekend in the NFL. You have the four best teams going at it for the ultimate prize...a trip to the Super Bowl. The two games this weekend ought to be great.

Green Bay (-3) @ Chicago
Aaron Rodgers is looking like the second coming of Joe Montana and everyone's riding the Packers wave through this game and into Dallas. I say, not so fast. This will not be a walkaway. Jay Cutler is playing the best football of his life and the Bears defense isn't going to lay down like Atlanta and Philly did. Julius Peppers and Brian Urlacher are going to have a say on how many points Green Bay will score. After all my bragging about Chicago, I'm still not sold on this game. The Packers defense will give Cutler fits as well and I see this as a relatively low scoring contest. I'm taking the Packers, only because Vegas is ALWAYS right on Championship Sunday but I'm still not truly sold on my prediction.

Green Bay 17 Chicago 14

Jets (+3) @ Steelers
I really like the way the Jets have been playing the last two weeks and they have all the swagger in the world right now. Sanchez is making good decisions, the line is blocking for the run game, and the defense looks solid. However, you can fake swagger all you want...you can't fake competence. Going into Indy, and winning. Going into Foxboro, and winning. And now going into Pittsburgh...and winning? I don't think so, the stars don't line up like that too often. Pittsburgh is no joke. Roethlisberger and his running game are ok, but the defense is spectacular. This might fare bad for the Jets but I've been wrong before.

McDaniels lands in The Lou.

Josh McDaniels will be Sam Bradford's new mentor after all. The Rams hired McDaniels as offensive coordinator, team and league sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

Earlier Tuesday, sources said a significant snag in negotiations between the Rams and McDaniels had led the team to broaden its search to include coaches with West Coast-system roots in which Bradford excelled during his rookie season.

McDaniels will replace Pat Shurmur, who was hired as head coach of the Cleveland Browns last week. After two days of negotiations failed to a produce a deal, talks between the Rams and McDaniels resumed later Tuesday.

McDaniels was fired as the Broncos' head coach on Dec. 6 after a rocky year-plus tenure in Denver. However, Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton flourished under McDaniels' tutelage, reaching career-highs in yards, touchdowns and passer ratings over two seasons.

Bradford passed for 3,512 yards and threw 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in his rookie season and is expected to be name the NFL's rookie of the year.

McDaniels also oversaw Tom Brady and current Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel while on New England's staff.

After Seattle fired offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates on Tuesday, McDaniels name surfaced in connection with that opening. The Rams even went through league channels Tuesday morning to request interviews with coaches including Bill Musgrave of the Falcons and Darrell Bevell of the Vikings. Musgrave is the assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach in Atlanta and Bevell has been in limbo as the offensive coordinator in Minnesota.

Jim Mora to Denver?

If the Eagles plan to make a play for Jim Mora (Not the "PLAYOFFS?!?!" Jim Mora, his son) as the franchise’s next defensive coordinator, they’d be wise to do so very soon...Like now.

Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post reports that Mora is close to becoming the next defensive coordinator of the Broncos. Mora served as head coach of the Seahawks in 2009, after two seasons as an assistant under Mike Holmgren. Before that, Mora spent three years as head coach of the Falcons.

Per the Post, Mora nearly became defensive coordinator of the Panthers under new Broncos coach John Fox in 2003, after Jack Del Rio was hired out of the position to become head coach of the Jaguars. It would be Mora’s first stint in the AFC since he spent seven seasons with the Chargers, from 1985 through 1991.

Plaxico talks already

Receiver Plaxico Burress is a free agent. Until June, however, he’s not free.

When his prison term ends, one team that has been trying to upgrade the receiver position could be interested. The Ravens. “I don’t know Plaxico Burress at all, I’ve never met him, but we’d consider him,” coach John Harbaugh said Monday, per NFL.com. “We’d consider anybody. It just depends on where he’s at. I’d like to find out what kind of person he is, to see where he’s really at in his life.”

Burress went to jail in 2009 after pleading guilty to charges arising from carrying a loaded weapon into a Manhattan nightclub. The gun went off, shooting Burress through the leg. Last year, the Ravens traded for Anquan Boldin in the offseason, and they landed T.J. Houshmandzadeh after he was dumped by the Seahawks in the final preseason roster cuts. But Boldin was invisible for long stretches of Saturday night’s game, and Houshmandzadeh dropped a pass that would have extended a potential game-tying drive.

Though Burress, if he still can play after two years away from the field, would be an upgrade, the Ravens still need a consistent deep threat that can stretch the field and draw double coverage. Burress would be great along the sidelines or in the back of the end zone, but to truly upgrade, the Ravens may need to make a run at Terrell Owens or Randy Moss. Though no longer truly dominant, they provide more of a down-the-field presence than anyone currently on the Ravens’ roster.

Daboll hired in Miami

Brian Daboll certainly wasn’t the biggest name that the Miami Dolphins interviewed for their open offensive coordinator job, but he’s the one who will get the gig. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Daboll —the former Browns offensive coordinator under Eric Mangini —should be formally named to the job later Monday or Tuesday. Former Vikings head coach Brad Childress met the Dolphins about the job, as did Cowboys tight end coach John Garrett. Chargers tight end coach Rob Chudzinski was believed to be the favorite for the job. Daboll was well regarded from his time in New England and then under Eric Mangini with the Jets and Browns. Still, his Cleveland teams were among the league’s worst in yards and points in both of his seasons there. There is more talent in Miami to work with than Cleveland, but this isn’t a hire that makes me think the Dolphins’ offensive philosophy will change that much.

Carolina hires McDermott to run defense

Fired in Philadelphia after only two years on the job as defensive coordinator, Sean McDermott has landed in Carolina. McDermott won’t even have to take a step down in title, as he’ll be the defensive coordinator for the Panthers according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN. McDermott will have to take a step down in responsibility. Defensive-minded head coach Ron Rivera has said he’ll run the defense, so McDermott may not even be calling plays. There is great familiarity between the two men from the time they shared together under Jim Johnson in Philadelphia. Ron Meeks will stay in Carolina as secondary coach.

Carolina names an offensive coordinator

On the same afternoon the Panthers chose Sean McDermott as defensive coordinator, they have picked a leader for the offense and special teams too. Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer reports former Chargers tight end coach Rob Chudzinski will run the team’s offense. It’s a massive hire because new head coach Ron Rivera has only coached defense, and Carolina’s biggest problems certainly reside on offense. Chudzinski has been a premier tight ends coach and coached up an explosive Browns offense in 2007. When the bottom fell out of Derek Anderson in 2008, “Chud” was sent packing along with head coach Romeo Crennel. Gantt points out that Chudzinski replaces Jeff Davidson as offensive coordinator for a second time, having also displaced him in Cleveland. There are decent offensive pieces in Carolina starting with a solid offensive line and promising backfield, even if DeAngelo Williams leaves this year. The problem, as ever, is at quarterback. It’s hard to imagine Jimmy Clausen entering training camp as a presumptive starter. The team also hired former Vikings special teams coach Brian Murphy as special teams coordinator. The team will also retain Sam Mills III.

Recap on the Divisional Playoffs

Steelers 31 Ravens 24
This game went exactly as I suspected it would, except for the fact that the Ravens jumped out to a huge lead and decided not to show up for the second half.

The Ravens gave that game to Roethlisberger, and we all know that Big Ben isn't used to getting things handed to him, he usually just takes it.

After tons of sacks, turnovers, and lack of a rushing attack on both sides, this game was tied up with less than 2 minutes to go. Pittsburgh marched down the field and ran the ball in to the end zone with a little over a minute left. Baltimore got the ball back but was unable to convert a 4th and long conversion when TJ Whosyourmomma dropped a pass that would've kept Baltimore's drive alive.

Pittsburgh will play the Jets this Sunday to attempt to make their 3rd Super Bowl in 6 years. The Steelers beat the Seahawks and the Cardinals in their previous two trips.

Packers 48 Falcons 21
I'm finally ready to say that the Packers are for real. They dominated a very good Falcons team, in Atlanta. Something no one else has done this season. Aaron Rodgers looked like an elite NFL quarterback and made Atlanta's defense look non-existent. He will be this year's Drew Brees, the guy constantly compared to Manning and Brady. This game was over just before halftime when the Packers were leading 21-14 and Matty Slush threw a pick 6 to end the half while trying to get into better field goal position.

The Packers then went into cruise control and their defense denied everything Atlanta came with for the rest of the game.

Green Bay will be playing Chicago this Sunday for a chance to play in their 5th Super Bowl. They won the first two Super Bowls ever played in 1966 and 1967 defeating the Raiders and the Chiefs, then beat New England in 1996 and lost to Denver the following year.

Bears 35 Seahawks 24
This game went almost exactly as planned as well as the first game. The Bears jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead and never looked back.

Jay Cutler, in his first postseason game since high school, looked great against a terrible looking Seahawks defense. While Matt Hasselbeck had a difficult time trying to read a stingy Bears D.

The Bears led 35-10 with a little over 2:00 to go in the game when Seattle decided to showcase their two minute offense and scored 14 quick points in garbage time. Chicago plays Green Bay on Sunday attempting to make their 3rd Super Bowl. They completely obliterated the Patriots in '85 and lost to the Colts in 2006.

Jets 28 Patriots 21
This was by far the most anticipated and best game of the weekend. There was more trash talking before this game than a garbage disposal could handle.

In what was expected to be a high scoring game, 32 of the 49 total points were scored in the last 15:13 of the game and 17 points were scored I'm the last 2:00.

This game started off slow with defenses and turnovers dominating and the Jets took a 14-3 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

Brady connected with Deion Branch with :13 left in the 3rd quarter and converted the 2-point conversion to make it 14-11. The Jets matched right back and scored a touchdown for a 10 point lead.

The Patriots then fooled everyone, including themselves by running the ball over and over and allowing the clock to tick down before missing a 4th down conversion with a little over 4 minutes left. The Patriots retained the ball later and kicked a field goal to make it a 7 point game with underachievers 2:00 to go. Shonne Green then ran the ball in to put the nail in the coffin. A crazy celebration followed, including Jets coach Rex Ryan joining the team in the end zone for the personal foul celebration. The Patriots got the ball back and scored another touchdown in garbage time but the game was ultimately over.

The Jets will play the Steelers Sunday for a chance to play in heir second Super Bowl. New York defeated the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.

Brad Childress favorite in Miami

The Miami Dolphins are very interested in former Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress for their Offensive Coordinator position.

I think this could be a great move for Miami and it opens the door for a possible trade for Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb. Childress has always been a fan of McNabb's and has openly suggested that he would like him on his team. This could be huge for Miami and would definitely answer their quarterback problem. Their defense is still suspect, but having McNabb, Marshall, Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams gives them the potential to put points on the board.

Divisional Round Picks

Here are my picks for the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Ravens (+3.5) @ Steelers
This is going to be a great game. Both defenses are fantastic and both quarterbacks can think on their feet. I think the running game is going to take full affect early and late however. There will be one or two big plays to keep both teams in it, but this game should be determined ultimately by a field goal.

Steelers 27 Ravens 24

Packers (+2) @ Falcons
All year I've been picking against Atlanta at home and losing. Not this time. The Falcons D is much better than advertised and their running game will slash through an overrated Green Bay squad. The Packers are America's favorite team right now...not mine. I think Atlanta is going to take this one by a touchdown.

Falcons 38 Packers 31

Seahawks (+10) @ Bears
The Bears Are another team that doesn't look particularly good on paper but they just keep winning games. This one ought to be a walk away. The Seahawks lookers great last week but they were playing at home against a very susceptible defense...not this time. Chicago's D will hold them until garbage time.

Bears 30 Seahawks 20

Jets (-9) @ Patriots
After all the smack talking this week, they actually have to play the game. Antonio Cromartie wants to f*** Tom Brady (as if he doesn't have enough kids himself) and Wes Welker is definitely aware of Rex Ryan's foot fetish. The bottom line is, the a Patriots are a MUCH better team than the Jets at just about every position on the field. And I'm sure Belicheck is going to put it on Ryan's boys.

Patriots 48 Jets 21

John Fox named Head Coach in Denver

The Denver Broncos have named the former Carolina Panthers head coach to the same position. Fox will be reunited with his former Offensive Coordinator, Mike McCoy. Fox, being a defensive minded coach, should help to turn around Denver's D. Personally I'm a little surprised that owner, Pat Bowlen, wants to keep McCoy. Denver's offense had many struggles this year, and Tim Tebow needs a little help in becoming a good NFL quarterback. I'm not sure McCoy is the man to do that.

All in all, the AFC West is very weak and this will help them become contenders. I just don't think they will have enough offensive fire power to compete for a championship.

Pat Shurmer leading candidate for HC job in Cleveland

Rams Offensive Coordinator, Pat Shurmer has emerged as the leading candidate for the Cleveland Browns head coaching position. The Browns are also looking at former Pittsburgh Panthers coach, Dave Wannstedt, for their defensive coordinator position.

I think both of these hires would be good for the team. Pat Shurmer has done a very good job with a weak Rams offense and made QB Sam Bradford a great ROY candidate. I think he can help Colt McCoy form into a legitimate NFL quarterback and get Cleveland's offense back on track.

Wannstedt has tons of NFL head coaching experience, most recently with the Bears and Dolphins. Coming back to a defensive coordinator in the NFL would be great for him and the Browns.

All in all, this works out well for Cleveland if everything works out. Their only problem is, they still play in the AFC North, one of the toughest divisions in the NFL.

Iowa's Sash to enter draft

Iowa safety Taylor Sash will declare for the NFL Draft. Sash had 15 picks and 216 tackles in 3 years as a Hawkeye. I assume he'll go in the second round and it wouldn't surprise me if the Colts pick him up. They love those Iowa guys and they're desperate for Safety help.

CarGo gets huge deal...is it deserved?

Carlos Gonzalez became the least experienced player in baseball history to receive such a lengthy and lucrative deal (seven-year, $80.5 million contract), according to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, a website that tracks MLB contracts.

The 25-year-old has played in 319 big-league games through parts of three seasons. The good news for Rockies fans is that Mr. Gonzalez is in excellent company. Previously, the least experienced player to sign a deal of at least seven years and $70 million was Chase Utley. He inked a seven-year, $85 million deal after playing 444 games. Likewise, Albert Pujols played 475 games before earning a seven-year, $100 million extension in 2004.

Other teams in recent years have locked their budding stars into long-term contracts, but paid significantly less. The Brewers gave Ryan Braun an eight-year contract in his second season, but will pay $45 million. The Rays took a similar approach with Evan Longoria, signing him to an option-laden deal during his rookie campaign that tops at nine years, $44.5 million.

In my opinion, a 7 year deal is a bit long. Outfielders come a dime a dozen and he only had ONE good year. I understand that he's young and winning a gold glove and silver slugger award looks great on a resume but to compare, Matt Kemp has the same awards with productive numbers in more than a single season. However, I don't see the Dodgers giving Kemp $11 mil a year for nearly a decade. I thinking Colorado needed to sign him and maybe this was the going market for him but he peaked at a convenient time and his upside is limited.

UCONN reportedly working out deal with Mark Whipple

UCONN is expected to name Mark Whipple their new head coach sometime this week. Whipple was the Offensive Coordinator at the University of Miami and was relieved of his duties when new Head Coach, Al Golden came in.

My view: I feel that UCONN could have acquires a better coach than Whipple. Mike Edsall was a very good coach, And although their record was weak, they did win the Big East. Whipple had problems getting the offense of the Hurricanes rolling at times, especially in the red zone. Miami had a top 20 recruiting class consistently with solid offensive weapons, and Whipple had problems getting them to score points.

I think that ultimately this is a bad deal for UCONN, and I don't see them improving much on their 7-5 record from this year.

The Detroit Tigers and free-agent right-hander Brad Penny have agreed to a one-year deal worth $3 million, plus $3 million in incentives, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

Penny, 32, is recovering from an upper-back injury that limited him to just nine starts in 2009. He went on the disabled list in late May, but at the time, it was believed to be a minor injury.

He was 3-4 with a 3.23 ERA after signing a one-year, $7.5 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals last offseason. The previous season, Penny started 30 games for Boston and San Francisco.

If healthy and effective, Penny could provide a boost to a Detroit rotation that also includes Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer.

The Tigers have been busy this offseason as they try to improve on last year's 81-81 record. Detroit also has added catcher Victor Martinez and reliever Joaquin Benoit.

Penny began his career with Florida in 2000, when Dave Dombrowski was an executive for the Marlins. Dombrowski is now Detroit's general manager. Penny helped the Marlins to a World Series title in 2003, then eventually ended up in Los Angeles, where he was an All-Star in 2006 and 2007, winning a career-high 16 games each of those two seasons.

Penny went 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 2007, finishing third in voting for the National League Cy Young Award. He has struggled to regain that form.

Penny was bothered by shoulder problems in 2008, and he was ineffective in a brief stint in the AL with Boston in 2009, going 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA. The Red Sox ended up releasing him in the middle of the season, but he caught on with the Giants and pitched well for them down the stretch.

Penny won his first three decisions with the Cardinals last year, allowing only three earned runs through his first four starts. He began having problems again soon after that, and he was pulled before the fourth inning of his last start May 21 before going on the disabled list.

My take: this is a little risky for $3 million. However, if he makes his incentives, it could be well worth the $6 million. He's EXTREMELY injury prone and I feel that his injuries have hampered his mechanics. If he can stay healthy, get his velocity back, and control the ball, he'll be a good 4 or 5 starter for Detroit.

Michigan names Brady Hoke head coach

I think this is a pretty good pickup for a Michigan football team that's finding it rather difficult to get a big name coach in town.

Hoke worked wonders at Ball State, taking them to a 12-1 record in 2008 and brought San Diego State to a 9-4 record last year after they were under. 500 for years.

Michigan was dead set against going after a guy without ties to the program, talking to Jim Harbaugh and Les Miles and being declined by both. Hoke is a great third option and, in my mind the talent level dropped immensely after him.

Grade: B+

Thoughts on Auburn's National Championship

Now that Cam Newton and the Auburn Tigers have won the National Championship, and I've been able to get a (half) nights sleep, I'll give my opinion on what this means for all parties involved. Speculation shall begin on what the future holds for both Auburn and Newton, my assumption is that they won't follow the same path, maybe the same success (or lack thereof) but they won't be together much longer.

It seems like a sure bet to me that Newton will declare for the NFL draft sometime in the next month or so. He's going to have to take a pay cut from what Auburn's paying him, partially because there's a new rookie cap on draft picks beginning this year, and partially because he's not going to be drafted that high anyhow. I project him as a late first/early second round pick. He'll be a decent fit for very few teams but the fact that he didn't play in a pro style offense and he's DEFINITELY not a pro style quarterback is going to make a lot of teams think twice about drafting a guy that's going to have to sit and learn for at least two seasons before he's ready for real action, and that's not even bringing up the fact that he's got more off-field issues than the entire Cincinnati Bengals team alone.

As far as the Auburn team goes, Chizik seems to have done an incredible job with this team in only his second season, but you can put most of this teams success squarely on the shoulders of Newton. Michael Dyer will be a silver lining seeing as he gained over 1200 yards as a Freshman and will stick around but Newton was the teams leading passer AND rusher this season and there really isn't a solution for when he enters the draft. The fact that they have to compete in the SEC doesn't fair in their favor either.

The biggest problem for Auburn will be when the NCAA finds that Newton was ineligible this season by taking money from the school. This will, I repeat, THIS WILL happen. Auburn will lose the designation of this year's National Champions and more importantly, they will lose TONS of scholarships, which we all know means years and years of mediocreness.

So, with all that said, Tiger fans shall celebrate until camp begins and try not to think about the future. Congratulations, you were the best team this year but don't hold your breath for another Championship anytime soon.

Game Over!

Auburn kicks the field goal with :00 on the clock and they are now National Champions! Congratulations. War Eagle. Thanks for your readership. I'm out!
A timeout. During the TO, Auburn decides to go for the TD. Newton and the offense are on the field. They don't get in, and now the field goal unit is trotting out. Results to follow...
The ball IS spotted at the 1, Auburn decides to kick the field goal...and it's...
Looks like the ball will be spotted at the 1. What should Auburn do? Go for the TD or kick the Field Goal?
All Auburn has to do is center the ball, and Michael Dyer says forget about it. He runs it in for a game winning TD if the ball broke the plan, it's under review.

Monday, January 10, 2011

Amazing run by Michael Dyer there. Awareness is key.
And the 2 point conversion is good! Deadlocked at 19 with 2:33 to play. Cam Newton will get the ball back here. Can he win it for them? Let's see if he can earn that Heisman.
Oregon scores! 2 point conversion to come. I see them going for a dump pass or pitch to get it in. Will Auburn be ready?
Oregon has it on the 2 with 4 minutes to go. They need a TD and the 2 point conversion to tie.
Oregon is 4 of 14 on 3rd down...hence their 11 points tonight. 4th and 5 for the game...and they CONVERT!
Cam Newton makes a HUGE mistake. Fumble recovered by Oregon on Auburn's 40. Once again, Casey Matthews makes me eat my words by forcing that Newton fumble. Oregon starts on their own 45 due to a personaql foul penalty, but here's their chance.
Oregon had to punt with 5 minutes to go. They may not see the ball again this season. Can Auburn put this game away?
Here's Oregon's last gasp. 6:30 left, down 8...gotta go 86 yards. Here we go.
Punting with 11 minutes to go, Oregon better hope they get the ball back being down by only one score.
Oregon may have saved their season on a 33 yard completion on a 3rd and long. You can tell Oregon wants it. Only problem is, Auburn does too.
I know it sounds funny, but while down 8 with 13 minutes to go, Oregon's getting desperate.
This field is ridiculous. Another slip and fall on a 3rd down to prevent Auburn from a first.
Start of the 4th quarter and I'm glad I stayed up for this. Auburn's up 19-11 but it's not a runaway yet.
This game is really fun. Oregon gets to the 2 on a long pass after the fake punt, they have a 4th and goal from the 1 and can't punch it in. There have been more fake punts/field goals, and going for it on 4th downs than I've seen in a long time. Great game.
With a chance to tie the game, Oregon fakes a punt on 4th and 7 and gets a first down. These Ducks are gutsy!
Cam Newton just proved why I don't think he's going to be a phenomenal NFL QB. On 3rd and long he overthrows a wide open receiver for a would be touchdown...can't do that repeatedly.
A dumb personal foul penalty by Auburn and some swift running by Oregon has the Ducks marching down the field. These teams are so fun to watch.
Oregon may be in trouble here. Down 8 points against this explosive offense is not where they wanted to be.
How many times is Oregon gonna let Newton just will himself for a couple yards and a first down? That's about the 5th time tonight.
Auburn getting the ball in the 3rd quarter. This can be dangerous for Oregon. It's imperative that they contain Auburn here. It's 3rd and 1 in Auburn territory.
Halftime
On 3rd and 8, Oregon throws a 2 yard pass That goes for -2 yards. What the hell is wrong with teams calling for routes that are 6 yards short of the first down marker?

With 1:41 to go, Auburn makes a mistake and gives an extra 15 yards on a personal foul. Why can't players stop at the whistle? Big mistake. Ball's at midfield.

Touchdown Auburn. 30 yard pass from Newton to Blair and now it's 16-11.

Ruling on the field stands. On the next play, Newton throws a 35 yard TD pass. 7-3 Auburn. We got a game folks.
Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.5
Oregon may have an interception here. The inital ruling was an incomplete pass but they're gonna take a look at it. Looks like he's in to me. Should be a pick. That would be the 4th TO of the game.

Yankees interested in Andruw Jones

Andruw Jones appears to be the Yankees' top choice as they continue to search for a fourth outfielder, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter).

The sides are still apart on money, Heyman writes. Agent Scott Boras, who represents Jones, also represents Johnny Damon, who is one of the Yankees' backup options. Former Yankee Marcus Thames is still a consideration for the Bronx Bombers.

The Yankees are looking for an outfielder who bats from the right side and can handle left and center field against tough lefties. The team wants a player that can give left-handed batters Curtis Granderson and Brett Gardner some rest against select southpaws and provide the team with depth.

Jones, 33, hit 19 homers for the White Sox last year, playing all three outfield positions. He has an .863 OPS against lefties in his career, including a .931 mark in 2010.

My opinion: If you can get the Andruw Jones that played for the Braves, it's a great fit. Even over the last few years he's had amazing numbers against lefties. I dont think he'll be commanding Johnny Damon money, so this deal will probably happen sooner than later.

Carolina to name Ron Rivera to Head Coaching position

The Carolina Panthers are calling all other candidates today to let them know hat they are moving in another direction. They will name San Diego's Defensive Coordinator, Ron Rivera, their new head coach sometime this week.

My Opinion: Ron Rivera is a great coach and should help Carolina's defense a lot. However, I feel Carolina's biggest challenge is getting their offense going. Now that Andrew Luck is staying in school and it's apparent that they will be sticking with Jimmy Claussen at QB, they really ought to be trying to get him a head coach that will work with him and mold the team around him. Jon Gruden would've been a perfect fit there but it seems that he'll be sitting out this season to prepare for the mass openings next season. All in all, look out for a stronger D in Carolina, but don't worry about them putting 40 points on you any time soon.

Fitzgerald in extension talks with Arizona

The Cardinals have opened contract talks with receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who holds most of the leverage in negotiations. The discussions have been preliminary, according to a source, and the team has considerable work to do before signing Fitzgerald to a third multi-year deal. ESPN first reported that negotiations had started, and two sources confirmed it. Fitzgerald's current contract, which pays him an average of $10 million a year, expires after the 2011 season and prevents the team from trading him or using the franchise and transition tags to restrict his movement in free agency. Fitzgerald entered the 2010 season as the NFL's highest-paid receiver, and a contract extension likely.

Ray Sherman out in Dallas

Well, Ray Sherman’s head-coaching interview with the Dallas Cowboys must have gone badly.

Really, really badly.

The team’s receivers coach since 2007, Sherman wasn’t hired to be the team’s next head coach. He also won’t be promoted to the job of offensive coordinator, a position that became vacant after Jason Garrett was promoted from interim head coach to head coach.

In fact, Sherman reportedly won’t even remain employed by the team. According to Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com, Sherman’s contract has expired and won’t be renewed.

The move will fuel suspicions that the interview of Sherman for head coach was a Rooney Rule sham. And if the Cowboys truly viewed Sherman as a legitimate candidate to be the next head coach of the team, something must have gone horribly wrong in his interview to persuade the Cowboys that he was unfit for further employment on the team.

Kolb wants to start or else...

Eagles QB Kevin Kolb said all the right things this season and couldn’t have been more supportive of Michael Vick. Now that the season is over, another approach is being used. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer credits a source that says Kolb wants out if the Eagles bring back Vick as a starter. Heck, the source may as well be Kolb’s post-game quotes. He doesn’t try to hide his feelings. “I love it here, as everybody knows,” Kolb said. “My family’s settled in here. I would love to be starting here. But I want to be starting somewhere.” Kolb was asked if he could handle another season as a backup in Philadelphia. “I can’t answer that question,” Kolb said. It didn’t take long for the offseason quarterback drama to start in Philly again, did it? We suspect this episode will drag on a while because the Eagles probably don’t want to let go Kolb go.

Recap on Wild Card Weekend

This was one of the most entertaining Wild Card weekends in recent memory. 2 games came down to the last drive and one game had over 70 points scored. Let's get to the reviews:

On Saturday the 7-9 home dog, Seattle Seahawks, overcame one of the largest point spreads in playoff history and defeated the defending Super Bowl Champions 41-36. The birds were down by 10 at two different points in the first half but rattled of 17 unanswered points in the second half and never lost the lead again. Matt Hasselbeck threw for four touchdowns with Marshawn Lynch adding a score himself. The Saints attempted a fourth quarter comeback but to no avail. Drew Brees threw 60 passes while completing 39 for over 400 yards in the losing effort. The Saints have never won a road playoff game, The Seahawks have never lost a playoff game at Qwest Field, and no 7-9 team has ever lost a playoff game...

In the night game the Super Bowl runner-up from last season played the AFC Championship runner-up from last season with a different result, the New York Jets defeated the Indianapolis Colts 17-16 on a walk-off field goal. The game started of with punt after punt after punt after punt while the Colts had 3rd and 1 and couldn't convert about 47 times. The Colts finally scored a 57 yard touchdown to Pierre Garcon with 5:25 left in the second quarter to take a whopping halftime lead of 7-0. The Jets came out of the gate with LT running like his TCU days and the Jets held a lead of 14-13 until Adam "I don't miss in the postseason" Vinatieri put the Colts ahead 16-14 with :57 seconds left in the game. On the ensuing kickoff, the Jets got to their own 47 yard line with two timeouts of their own and one of the Colts' that Jim Caldwell decided he didn't want anymore, so he gave it to T-Rex Ryan. The Jets took 5 plays to get the ball well into the territory of Ryan's third favorite foot, the right foot of Nick Folk, and he put it through to end Ryan's drought against Manning.

In the Sunday early game John "the other" Harbaugh defeated the Kansas City Chiefs handily, 30-7, in a game that made me change the channel to watch re-runs of "Dora the Explorer" with my kids. I would really like to tell you more about the game but seriously, I was watching Dora. All I know is, the Chiefs kept it interesting by taking a 7-3 lead with 2:00 to go in the first quarter and I'm not sure if the Chiefs saw the ball again. Matt Cassel threw for a robust 70 yards on 9/18 passing, and Jamaal Charles had 82 and THE score for KC. Joe Flacco threw for 265 yards and 2 TD's on 25/34 passing and Willis McGahee put in another score just to rub it in with 4:00 to go in the game.

Luckily I had enough Cheetos and threats of turning the Chiefs back on, for my kids to allow me to watch the late game...and boy was it worth it. The Packers beat the Eagles 21-16 in a game full of excitement. Aaron Rodgers threw for 180 yards and 3 scores while James Starks ran for 123 for a rookie franchise playoff record. Michael Vick threw for 292 yards on 20/36 passing with one passing TD along with 33 yards rushing with one rushing TD. The Packers jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter while the Eagles kicked a field goal with a minute left in the half to cut the deficit to 14-3. The Packers got the ball back and had an opportunity to go up 21-3 but James Jones dropped a perfectly thrown pass with seconds left in the half and the Cheeseheads settled with the 11 point lead. The Eagles came out of the locker room and put 7 up in less than 2 minutes and then we had a ballgame. The Packers put up another TD with 7 minutes to go in the 3rd to regain their 2 score lead. In the fourth quarter with 4 minutes to go, Michael Vick ran in for a one yard score to make it 21-16. After hobbling off the field after two failed two point conversion attempts (No, the Eagles fans did not electrocute Vick. Yes, they wanted to electrocute Celek) The Eagles had to kickoff, down 5. The Packers went a quick three and out and actually kicked to DeSean Jackson (They must've missed the Giants game) with two minutes to go. Vick completed a couple quick passes to Jackson and Riley Cooper, then he got the kiss of death with pick in the endzone. The Packers kneeled on it and won the game 21-16.

Like I said before, this was a very exciting weekend. Check back on Friday for my predictions for next weeks games.

Nets, Pistons, and Nuggets close to deal; Anthony going to Nets

The New Jersey Nets' attempts to acquire Denver's Carmelo Anthony are "further along" than any trade scenario that has been discussed since their near-acquisition of Anthony in late September, according to sources close to the negotiations.

A three-team deal involving the Detroit Pistons that would include at least 15 players --with Rip Hamilton and Chauncey Billups winding up in New Jersey with Anthony --could be completed as soon as this week, sources said. The primary elements of the scenario currently on the table, sources said, call for New Jersey to acquire Anthony, Billups and Hamilton; Denver to land Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Anthony Morrow and at least two first-round picks; and Detroit to acquire Troy Murphy and Johan Petro.

Other players with smaller contracts would have to be included to make the salary-cap math work. One key to the advancing nature of negotiations, sources said, is the Nets' and Nuggets' willingness to complete a trade without asking Detroit to surrender a first-round pick.

When the talks involving Detroit as a potential third-team facilitator were first reported Friday night by the Bergen Record of New Jersey, sources told ESPN.com that the Pistons were balking largely because they were being asked to surrender a first-rounder. Yet sources said one of the remaining potential snags is New Jersey's insistence that the Pistons absorb the contract of Petro. The Pistons do not want to take back Petro, even though shedding Hamilton's contract in exchange for Murphy and the Nets' center would represent an overall savings of roughly $17 million. Sources say

Detroit's stance on Petro has prompted New Jersey to begin looking for a fourth team that might be willing to take on the 24-year-old big man. The Nets turned to Detroit to help seal their months-long pursuit of Anthony after attempts to rope in Cleveland, Minnesota and Portland as a third-team facilitator failed to progress.

Any trade for Anthony, however, still hinges on the All-Star forward's willingness to sign a three-year, $65 million extension with the Nets as part of the transaction in what is known as an extend-and-trade. The Boston Celtics got the same extend-and-trade commitment from Kevin Garnett when they acquired him from Minnesota in July 2007.

The Nets have made it clear that they will not agree to an Anthony deal without getting his signature on an extension a la Garnett. ESPN.com reported last month that the Nets plan to request permission --and have already been told they will receive it --to meet with Anthony face-to-face if a trade agreement is eventually struck with Denver. That would allow owner Mikhail Prokhorov and part-owner Jay-Z to lead a Nets contingent that would try to lobby the Brooklyn-born Anthony directly on the team's future, with the Nets planning to move to Brooklyn in time for the 2012-13 season.

The Nets long ago committed to send prized rookie Favors, former All-Star Harris and at least two first-round picks to the Nuggets in exchange for Anthony. But New Jersey has been attempting to find a third team to help facilitate the blockbuster deal for Anthony that they've been chasing since the September collapse of a four-team swap involving Charlotte and Utah.

One source close to the situation insisted Sunday that the Nets --optimistic as this sounds --believe a face-to-face meeting with Prokhorov won't even be necessary to get Anthony's signoff if New Jersey can indeed acquire Billups and Hamilton. It was not immediately clear, though, how Denver native Billups' reported desire to seek a buyout if he's traded by his hometown team to the Nets would affect Anthony's stance.

What did seem clear Sunday is that the talks have taken on their most serious tone since the negotiations in February that would have landed Harris in Charlotte and Jazz veteran Andrei Kirilenko in Denver. The New York Knicks remain Anthony's strongly preferred destination, sources say, but Denver has shown little interest in the Knicks' assets (such as Wilson Chandler, Landry Fields and Danilo Gallinari) and have been negotiating almost exclusively with the Nets for weeks. With Favors and a cache of first-round picks it can move, New Jersey has a far more attractive war chest of trade assets.

It likewise appears the Nets will not abandon their pursuit of Anthony until they're told directly by the All-Star forward that he would not sign an extension with them, which is the message some sources close to the process still believe New Jersey will get, as reported in December by ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan. Nets officials, though, have remained quietly confident for months that Anthony, born in Brooklyn, ultimately would agree to the extension --no matter how much he'd prefer to play in New York --to ensure that he locks in his contract before labor negotiations this summer that are expected to establish a much more restrictive financial landscape in the league.

One source close to the talks said Sunday afternoon that the deal could be clinched if the Nets can find a fourth team willing to absorb Petro's salary. Detroit has been restricted in its attempts to make roster moves in recent months because of the team's pending sale, but sources told ESPN.com on Friday that the Pistons would be very interested if a trade scenario developed where they only had to surrender Hamilton and take back Murphy.

The Nets and Nuggets, meanwhile, have not stopped looking for other teams beyond Detroit that would be interested in joining the trade, since Denver does not have a strong need for Harris with young guard Ty Lawson on the roster. New Jersey and Denver have likewise continued to discuss trade possibilities with the Nuggets that don't involve any other teams.

Details on Asomugha

Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha's contract voided and he will be allowed to become a free agent without the Oakland Raiders being able to use their franchise tag on him, according to an NFL Players Association document.

Asomugha’s deal included a little-known clause that said his contract would void if he didn’t achieve his not-likely-to-be-earned incentives in 2010 --and he didn'’t. His contract also contained a stipulation that if he didn’t achieve his incentives, the Raiders would agree not to designate him their franchise or transition player.

To achieve his incentives, Asomugha had to play in a greater number of defensive plays in 2010 than he did in 2009, and this season Asomugha played in only 14 games whereas he played in all 16 in 2009.

He also could have achieved his incentives by improving upon on his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season --but he didn't have any interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season.

He will be the top defensive player available whenever free agency begins.

Caldwell explains poor timeout call

With 29 seconds left, the clock running and the Jets having the ball at the Colts’ 32-yard line, Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell made a surprising decision: He called timeout. The TV cameras caught the look on Peyton Manning’s face on the sideline, and Manning was obviously thinking the same thing many of us were thinking: “What in the world is Caldwell doing?” Caldwell was asked to explain after the game. “I didn’t care. I was going to make sure that they couldn’t. Make them snap the ball. They were in field goal range,” Caldwell said. “We wanted to try to make them snap the ball as many times as they possibly could.”

Yes, the Jets were in field goal range: In range for what would have been a 50-yard field goal, which is no chip shot for Jets kicker Nick Folk, who went 5-for-11 on field goal attempts of 40 yards or longer this season. As it turned out, on the very next play after that timeout, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez hit Braylon Edwards on an 18-yard completion, and on the next play after that Folk kicked the game-winning 32-yard field goal as time expired.

Frankly, Caldwell’s explanation doesn’t make any sense because his decision doesn’t make any sense. Making the Jets snap the ball again just gave the Jets another opportunity to make the field goal easier, and that’s exactly what they did.

Caldwell should have known better, because he made the same mistake during the regular season at Jacksonville, using two timeouts during the Jaguars’ final drive and helping Jacksonville set up a game-winning field goal. Caldwell didn’t learn from that mistake, and the Jets benefited on Saturday night.

Michigan to discuss HC job with Miles

Michigan expressed interest in talking to LSU coach Les Miles prior to the AT&T Cotton Bowl and it is expected the meeting will occur soon, sources told ESPN.

One source close to Miles said a time and place has not been finalized. Another source said the coach would give LSU 24 hours notification before the interview and that had not occurred.

Miles, a Michigan alum, would be interested in listening to athletic director Dave Brandon, one source close to him said. Miles has won 62 games in six seasons at LSU including the 2007 national championship. Earlier Saturday, LSU athletic director Joe Alleva released a statement saying the school had not spoken with anyone from Michigan. "I have not been contacted by anyone from the University of Michigan about Les Miles," Alleva said. "Les Miles is LSU's head coach and we are going to do everything we can to keep it that way. He has had great success here and we plan to keep enjoying that success under his leadership."

Miles has more than $18 million guaranteed left on his contract, a source said. If Miles were to leave for Michigan, LSU would be owed $1.25 million, with no buyout for any other school, the source said.

Michigan had a conversation with Miles when the job was open at the end of the 2007 season, though Miles said he was offering advice in the search and was not a candidate.

Miles played offensive line for Michigan and was a graduate assistant and then coach there from 1987-1994.

Michigan had expressed interest in former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh and Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald, sources say.

Harbaugh took the job as San Francisco 49ers coach on Friday. Fitzgerald said he is not interested.

San Diego State coach Brady Hoke is another potential candidate.

New Overtime Rules for playoffs

IThe NFL has a new set of overtime rules for the playoffs. Theoretically, each team get the possession. However, the reality is, if the first team to possess the ball scores, a touchdown the game is over. If the receiving team kicks a field goal, the other team gets an opportunity to score as well. If they kicking team scored a field goal is well it goes into double overtime. If the receiving team fails to score at all the kicking team then gets an opportunity to possess the ball, if they score the game is over. These rules are very confusing and are making coaches lose sleep at night. Let's hope we don't have to try them out this year.

Denver talking to John Fox

Denver wants to talk to John Fox about their head coaching vacancy and they are in the process of getting permission from the Carolina Panthers to do so, according to The Denver Post --despite the fact he's officially been ruled out to return for another season with the team. Fox, whose Panthers finished an NFL-worst 2-13 in 2010 in the last season of his deal with the team, is technically still under contract with Carolina for a few weeks, according to The Post, which cited an anonymous NFL source in its report. Fox is one of a number of candidates for the Broncos as they look to replace Josh McDaniels, fired amid his second season in Denver before the team finished a franchise-worst 4-12. On Sunday they will interview New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, an interim coach for Buffalo in 2009, and Eric Studesville, who went 1-3 as interim Broncos coach after his promotion from running backs coach following McDaniels' firing last month. Newly hired Broncos boss John Elway tweeted Friday he had received permission to talk with Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. Elway also said he's seeking permission from the Houston Texans to interview offensive coordinator Rick Dennison, a longtime Broncos assistant who has never been an NFL head coach, and is considering calling former Giants coach Jim Fassel, who tutored Elway in college and in the pros. General manager Brian Xanders said on Sirius/XM Radio on Friday that San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera and New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams are also among those the Broncos are targeting. Dodgers owner trying to keep team

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt met for three days this week with executives from the commissioner's office as Bud Selig considers options that could complicate McCourt's ability to remain in control of the team.

McCourt met with several of Selig's lieutenants —but not with the commissioner himself —from Monday through Wednesday at Major League Baseball headquarters in New York, according to three high-ranking officials familiar with the discussions but not authorized to talk about them.

McCourt requested the meetings, the officials said. MLB spokesman Pat Courtney said he could not discuss —or even confirm —the meetings. McCourt had no comment, according to his spokesman, Steve Sugerman. McCourt outlined his legal and financial plans for retaining control of the Dodgers, amid divorce proceedings that started 15 months ago, according to one of the officials.

A court last month threw out a marital property agreement that would have granted him sole ownership of the Dodgers, meaning McCourt almost certainly would have to pay his ex-wife Jamie a significant amount of money in addition to managing a steep debt in order to keep the team. It is uncertain exactly what McCourt proposed in his meetings, but he could get hundreds of millions of dollars by either negotiating a new television contract with Fox or selling a minority share of the Dodgers, then using the proceeds to settle his divorce.

McCourt has insisted he has no plan to sell any share of ownership. However, Selig could reject any television contract or partnership agreement. After court documents in the divorce trial revealed how the McCourts diverted millions in team revenue each year for personal use, Selig could cite grounds that such money should be used to improve the team rather than to pay off an ex-wife, one official said.

In addition, the officials said, Selig could refuse McCourt the short-term financing available to owners from MLB.

It is unclear whether such actions could pressure McCourt to the point of putting the team up for sale, whether McCourt would take legal action to stop any such moves, or how any decisions Selig might consider would be affected by Jamie McCourt's contention that she owns half the team.

However, the owner of another MLB club said he doubted Frank McCourt could rally other owners behind him —and against Selig —should the commissioner decide to act. "I can't imagine one vote going against Bud on anything having to do with the Dodgers," said the owner, who declined to be identified because Selig has not authorized him to speak on the issue.

According to court documents, the Dodgers' parent company had $433 million in long-term debt and $619 million in total liabilities as of September 2009, and McCourt was rejected at least three times that year in trying to secure additional financing.

The Dodgers have increased in value from the $430 million McCourt paid to buy them in 2004 to an estimated $727 million last year, according to Forbes magazine. If the court finds the Dodgers are community property, Jamie McCourt would be entitled to half their value. If the court ultimately decides the Dodgers belong to Frank McCourt, Jamie likely would be entitled to a portion of the increase in value, as the former president and chief executive officer of the team.

Dolphins cancel press conference; Meeting scheduled with Mangini

Now that Jim Harbaugh drama is out of our lives, we can focus on the real circus in the NFL: The Miami Dolphins. The team has canceled a 4:45 p.m press conference that was expected to confirm Tony Sparano was staying as head coach. We previously passed along a Miami Herald report that the team was talking about Sparano about an “adjustment” in his contract. It’s not a shock that those talks have apparently hit a snag considering the awkward nature of Miami’s coaching search. It gets even stranger. Jeff Darlington reports that the Dolphins scheduled a meeting with Eric Mangini that was ultimately canceled Friday. After “persistent” requests, the Dolphins admitted the meeting was set up. They say it was for a “consultant” role because Mangini knows the AFC East so well. One would think they’d lock in a head coach before calling in Mangini to consult, but owner Stephen Ross has consistently conducted himself in such a ridiculous manner the last four days that it’s hard to be surprised.

Dolphins want extension for Sparano

The Miami Dolphins are prepared to offer head coach Tony Sparano a one-year extension through 2012, but sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen there are raw emotions stemming from the team's pursuit of Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh met earlier Thursday with Miami owner Stephen Ross in the San Francisco area about the Dolphins' job, sources told Mortensen. But Harbaugh and the Dolphins broke off talks later in the day, sources told The Associated Press. A source told Mortensen on Thursday night that the Dolphins will retain Sparano.

Wildcard Weekend Picks

I will be making weekly picks during the playoffs. Check back every Friday through the Super Bowl.

New Orleans (-11) @ Seattle
In the paraphrased words of Dan Patrick, "They can't stop them, they can only hope to cover." I see New Orleans putting up a 40 spot, at least, and Seattle will struggle to score 10 before the Saints' backups are in. This will be a blowout of record proportions. I think Brees will throw for 400+ yards through 3 quarters and he'll be watching Chase Daniel hand the ball off the rest of the game.
Saints 48, Seahawks 16

Jets @ Colts (-3)
I see this as a relatively low scoring game until the 4th quarter when both teams will begin exchanging leads. I think Peyton Manning will get the best of Rex Ryan again but it's not going to be easy. The Jets will force Manning to hand the ball off to Addai and Rhodes in order to beat them, and that's exactly what he'll do. This will come down to the wire with Vinatieri popping in a field goal with under 2 minutes to win it. Look out for Blair White in this game too. Revis and Cromartie can't cover everybody.
Colts 30, Jets 27

Ravens (-3) @ Chiefs
This will be all about defense and running. If there's a boring game this week, this will be it. If the over under was 25, I'd go under. Both teams will try to keep the ball out of each other's hands but I think ultimately the Ravens defense wins this one.
Ravens 14, Chiefs 10

Packers @ Eagles (-3)
On the flip side, this has the potential to be the most exciting game this week. Will either defense be able to stop either offense? This will look like a repeat of this years Sugar Bowl in the beginning. Each team will start out flying high and eventually calm down to a steady running attack to control the clock at the end. I see this as another tight one, with a field goal winning it and Michael Vick walking off a winner.
Eagles 34, Packers 31

Sparano staying in Miami, but is HE happy?

A strange two days has ended in Miami with the Dolphins not hiring Jim Harbaugh.

And they apparently won’t be hiring Jim Harbaugh.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the Dolphins are keeping Sparano as the head coach. The news comes amid increasing reports suggesting that Harbaugh would not be joining the Dolphins.

Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, for example, reported earlier tonight that Harbaugh “isn’t sold” on the Miami situation, and that he was “looking for reasons to look elsewhere.”

The end result, in my view, is embarrassment for a Dolphins franchise that allowed Sparano to twist in the wind while wooing his replacement. Apart from the egg that the team is now wearing on its face, the relationship between Sparano and G.M. Jeff Ireland likely has suffered irreparable damage. Sure, they’ll say all the right things.

But Sparano will never fully trust Ireland again.

Pujols in serious discussions with Cards about extension

After a holiday break, it appears that talks between the Cardinals and Albert Pujols' agent are on. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Wednesday that negotiations between the parties "resumed this week" and that the conversations thus far "have taken on a 'positive' tone." That would be significant progress, considering that earlier conversations between the two sides were characterized as something short of actual negotiations. Though some housekeeping remains for the Cards this winter, the club has just about cleared all other major matters off of its docket. The 25-man roster is all but set, with any remaining additions likely coming in the form of Minor League free-agent signings.

McDaniels to meet with Vikings about OC position

Josh McDaniels would rather be an assistant coach in Minnesota than a head coach in San Francisco. ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that McDaniels is scheduled to meet Friday with Vikings coach Leslie Frazier about an undefined assistant coaching job. (Very likely the offensive coordinator position.) McD passed up a chance to interview for the 49ers head coaching job earlier Thursday. Don’t forget the Vikings still have an offensive coordinator: Brett Favre’s BFF Darrell Bevell. While nothing has been made official about Bevell’s status, this news strongly indicates the Vikings are looking to go in a new direction. The Childress-Favre-Bevell offense appears to be on the way out. McDaniels seems to have learned from Eric Mangini’s mistake in Cleveland. Jumping into another hazardous head coaching job right after getting fired isn’t necessarily the best way to learn your craft, achieve coaching longevity, and maximize a potential second chance. It’s very rare to get three chances, so you better make the second one count.

Rangers avoid arbitration with David Murphy

The Rangers signed outfielder David Murphy to a one-year contract worth $2.4MM, avoiding arbitration, according to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com (via Twitter). Murphy appeared in 138 games with Texas in 2010, primarily in left and right fields. The left-handed hitter posted a solid offensive season (.291/.358/.449 in 467 plate appearances) and was especially tough on right-handed pitchers (.298/.368/.479). Scanning MLBTR's Arbitration Tracker, the Rangers now have four arbitration-eligible players remaining: Nelson Cruz, Josh Hamilton, C.J. Wilson and Darren O'Day. Reliever Mark Lowe, acquired midseason from the Mariners in the Cliff Lee swap, avoided arbitration in November.

Possible Vince Young destinations

The Titans can’t cut Vince Young until Feb. 7, when waivers start for next season. They can’t trade him until the first day of the new league year in March --and that’s likely to get pushed way back by a lockout.

He has little to no value now as the Titans have said they are finished with him and no one would want to inherit the big numbers for the final year of his contract. Where could he wind up? I surveyed my blog network brethren to produce this list.

Arizona --Certainly quarterback needy as they continue to try to recover from a Kurt Warner hangover.

Buffalo --They like Ryan Fitzpatrick, but he’s not a franchise guy and if they think Young could be, they might be interested.

Carolina --If Andrew Luck comes out, he’s the Panthers' guy. If he doesn’t, who knows what a new regime will do?

Denver --Tim Tebow is the future, but with Kyle Orton likely to be traded, the Broncos could look for a backup.

Houston --Could take a crack on trying to retool Young, a Houston native, as a backup behind Matt Schaub.

Kansas City --Doesn’t look like a fit to me, but the Chiefs can use a backup.

Miami --Chad Henne hasn’t taken off the way they’d hoped, so they are definitely in the quarterback market.

Minnesota --Looking for multiple quarterbacks, but the Vikings need a coordinator first.

Oakland --Al Davis certainly might like him and the Raiders hardly have a surefire guy to prevent them from looking.

San Francisco --Once a new coach is in place, a new quarterback will become priority one.

Seattle --Will certainly be looking even with Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Whitehurst.

Washington --There’s an opening, but it’s hard to imagine Mike Shanahan taking a guy his buddy Jeff Fisher had an ugly ending with.

Hasselbeck starting Saturday?

Matt Hasselbeck will start at quarterback for the Seahawks in Saturday's NFC playoff game against the New Orleans Saints, Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Thursday after practice. Hasselbeck, who missed Seattle's season finale with a hip injury, had been sharing snaps this week with Charlie Whitehurst, who started Sunday night against the St. Louis Rams. Hasselbeck has completed 59.9 percent of his passes this season for 3,001 yards and 12 touchdowns, with 17 interceptions. Whitehurst, who has appeared in six games this season, completed 22 of 36 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown against the Rams. The 16-6 win handed the Seahawks (7-9) an improbable NFC West title and a home playoff game against the defending Super Bowl champion Saints (11-5).

Rangers not going after Rafael Soriano

The Rangers are not currently pursuing Rafael Soriano and were not engaged with him at any point this winter, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter links). The team signed Adrian Beltre this week, so there's not enough money remaining in the team's budget for Soriano, another Scott Boras client. There's a potential fit for Soriano in Anaheim as MLBTR's Mark Polishuk explains here. Jon Heyman of SI.com has suggested that the Yankees are likely to pursue Soriano if Andy Pettitte retires and the White Sox are eyeing the reliever, too. The Cardinals don't appear to have much interest, however. Soriano is one of three unsigned free agents who will cost a draft pick. The Red Sox, who are in line for the Rangers' 2011 first rounder, would only get Texas' second rounder if Soriano heads to the Lone Star State, so there's reason for them to hope he signs elsewhere.

Details on Harbaugh to Miami

They met for 6.5 hours today, and there seemed to be a deal in place for Jim Harbaugh to sign on as the 49ers’ next head coach. All Harbaugh had to do was sign the paper. But he told 49ers owner Jed York and GM Trent Baalke that he had to at least listen to what Miami owner Steve Ross had to offer. And that’s about as close to Harbaugh as the 49ers might ever get. There are multiple reports that the Dolphins are set to offer Harbaugh a mind-bogglingly massive deal averaging $7M to $8M a year, which would possibly top Bill Belichick as the No. 1 deal among all NFL coaches. Ross, who flew out from Florida, is due to meet with Harbaugh tomorrow morning. The 49ers, according to an NFL source, are prepared to offer Harbaugh about $5M per over five years. And if Harbaugh gets that mega-offer from Miami, the source said, the 49ers are unlikely to go dollar-for-dollar and would be prepared to move on from Harbaugh. This should come to a head around noon tomorrow. To that end, an NFL source indicated that York and Baalke already have had initial discussions with fired Denver coach Josh McDaniels. They’ve already interviewed Raiders OC and presumed future HC Hue Jackson. Other possible interviews: Rams OC Pat Shurmur, NY Jets OC Brian Schottenheimer and former Ravens coach Brian Billick. None of those names will do much to placate most 49ers fans, who were eagerly anticipating the addition Harbaugh, the hottest coaching commodity to hit the market in years. York, after all, was the one who said money would be no object in hiring a coach to replace Mike Singletary and a new GM. He promoted Baalke from within, and hoped that would set the stage for a Harbaugh hiring. If it’s Baalke and not Harbaugh… there will be reason for discontent, and one question should be asked: Shouldn’t York have known from the outset that Harbaugh could get north of $6M per? Pete Carroll, Harbaugh’s great rival, got more than $6M last year with Seattle and many presumed that Harbaugh would inevitably get a deal greater than that. According to a source, everything went smoothly during the face-to-face discussions between Harbaugh and the 49ers today. He and Baalke meshed well and the money terms were being negotiated with agent David Dunn. Then Harbaugh said he would talk to Ross, and the 49ers heard that the Dolphin offer could blow theirs away. As always, there will be repercussions.

Xzavier Dickson commits to Alabama

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Four-star defensive end Xzavier Dickson (Griffin, Ga,/Griffin) will leave the Peach State to play for Nick Saban at the University of Alabama.
Dickson chose Alabama over Auburn and Georgia. He is one of the members of the Georgia "Dream Team" -- a group of in-state players that were being heavily courted to come to the University of Georgia.
Instead Dickson, a 6-foot-4, 242-pounder, says he's living his own dream.
"I think Alabama has a pretty good recruiting class too," Dickson joked. "I love the coaches there and I feel like their style of football best works for me."
Dickson, the No. 22-rated player in the Class of 2011, gives Alabama its eighth commitment from the ESPNU 150. The Crimson Tide currently have the second-best recruiting class in the nation and are in a battle with Texas and FSU for the top-rated class overall.
As a senior, Dickson had his second straight year of double-digit sacks and was a first-team all-state selection.

Eric Chavez to work out with 3 MLB Clubs

Eric Chavez To Work Out With Dodgers, Two AL Clubs
By Mark Polishuk [January 5 at 8:46pm CST]
Eric Chavez will work out with the Dodgers on January 20, and has two other private workouts lined up with American League clubs, writes Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. The AL teams aren't named, but Slusser specifies that the Dodgers are the only southern Californian team in the mix, which counts out the Athletics. (Twitter link) We heard last month that Seattle had "checked in" on Chavez, so they could be one of the two mystery teams.
The Dodgers were rumored to have an interest in bringing Chavez in for a workout. They fit Chavez's preference to remain in southern California and Slusser notes that Chavez has spoken to Don Mattingly. The left-handed hitting Chavez could be a nice platoon partner with incumbent Dodgers third baseman Casey Blake, a right-handed hitter who only managed a .663 OPS against right-handed pitching last season.
The big question, of course, is Chavez's health. He has undergone two back surguries and three shoulder surguries in his career and he has played in just 64 games since July 26, 2007. Chavez told Slusser that his "throwing has been unreal" in workout sessions at the Athletes' Performance center in Arizona (which is of particular interest given Chavez's Gold Glove defense in his prime) but he "needs to see live pitching to judge the hitting accurately."
